Kilogram redefinition Roadmap Industry News

Previously it was stated that the kilogram was the ONLY SI unit represented by a physical international prototype which is housed in France. However, the story of the kilogram is being rewritten. Although the international prototype has served international metrology for over a century it will in all likelihood  be superseded and the roadmap is in place. The standard iridium-platinum metre prototype has been superseded by a more precise definition in terms of the distance travelled at the speed of light for a specific fraction of a second. Similarly proposals have been made to define the kilogram in terms of either the Planck or Avagadro constants. Nevertheless, for the time being, the definition of the kilogram remains “A unit of mass equal to the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram”.

The gram (which is 1/1000th kilogram) was originally defined in 1795 as the mass of one cubic centimeter of water at the melting point of water, making the kilogram equal to the mass of one liter of water. The original prototype kilogram, was manufactured in 1799 and from which the IPK is derived, had a mass equal to the mass of 1.000025 liters of water at 4 °C.

Giant Sting-ray could be a Record Breaker !Industry News

There’s something massive in the water.

Animal expert Jeff Corwin found what might be the world’s biggest stingray in Thailand’s Mae Klong River.

The 14-foot long and 8-foot wide freshwater ray could be the largest freshwater fish ever captured, Corwin said on Facebook.

The giant creature weighs an estimated 700 to 800 pounds, National Geographic reported. That means it would beat out the current record, a Mekong giant catfish that weighs 660 pounds and also live in Thailand.

The catch was filmed for an episode of Corwin’s “Ocean Mysteries.” The nature team measured and microchipped the ray for tracking, and then they released it back into the river.

Scales and Car RacingIndustry News

Another arena where the importance of scales is not realized by the majority of those enjoying the sport is car racing ! while Formula 1 drivers are looking for lightweight and a minimum weight requirement of 1415 lb. (642 kg.), NASCAR has it's own regulations putting the overall weight is sitting at 3450 lb. (1565 kg.) the Gen 6 cars have actually been trimmed by 160 lb; specifically 100 lb on the right and 60 lb on the left. Minimum driver weight has also been reduced to 180 lb from 200 lb.

Scales referred to as racing scales, wheel weighers, portable scales, or weight distribution scales are used widely in the racing industry. There are various, yet similar models on the market today including Intercomp and CAS

Tony Stewart Flagged for "Weighty" IssueIndustry News

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Tony Stewart opened Speedweeks with a weighty - and heated - issue.

Stewart was visibly upset Friday as he stormed through the garage after getting black flagged for failing to step on a scale before getting behind the wheel.

Stewart was one of 25 drivers practicing for Saturday night's exhibition Sprint Unlimited, but one of just three who didn't weigh in before the session started. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch also had to return to the scale after getting in their cars.

Stewart didn't heed the initial call.

NASCAR eventually flagged Stewart, ordering him back to the garage to get weighed. But he refused, and when he did finally park his car after his practice run ended, Stewart and crew chief Chad Johnston were called to the NASCAR hauler for what likely was a stern lecture about following the rules.

They emerged 10 minutes later, and Stewart headed straight for the scale.

Weight & Formula 1 racingIndustry News

The modern day Formula One cars are constructed from composites of carbon fibre and similar ultra-lightweight materials. The minimum weight permissible is 642 kg (1,415 lb) including the driver but not fuel. Cars are weighed with dry-weather tyres fitted.[2] Prior to the 2014 F1 season, cars often weighed in under this limit so teams added ballast in order to add weight to the car. The advantage of using ballast is that it can be placed anywhere in the car to provide ideal weight distribution. This can help lower the car's centre of gravity to improve stability and also allows the team to fine tune the weight distribution of the car to suit individual circuits.

Professional race cars are almost completely handmade using lightweight materials designed for maximum efficiency. The frame is made from a steel tubing, and the body is constructed in lightweight sheet metal, all surrounding a bare block engine. Lightweight construction combined with aerodynamic design combine to generate downforce, which allows the race car to go through tight turns quickly with as little resistance as possible.

The chocolate-making process remained unchanged for hundreds of years. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution, when mechanical mills were used to squeeze out cocoa butter which created durable chocolate, that many changes occured.  Chocolate by the numbers....http://www.statista.com/topics/1638/c

Sartorius to Sell Its Industrial Technologies Division to Minebea Co., Ltd. Industry News

Sartorius to focus on its core bioprocess and laboratory businesses | Excellent prospects for customers and employees of the Industrial Technologies Division under a new roof

Goettingen, December 19, 2014 - Sartorius, a leading international laboratory and pharmaceutical equipment provider, is selling its Industrial Technologies Division (Intec) to the Japanese Minebea Co., Ltd. (Minebea) and their partner, the Development Bank of Japan Inc. The respective contract was signed today. The sales price will be determined as a multiple of the Intec division’s 2014 operating profit and be fixed in early 2015. The contractual parties agreed on a 7.5 multiple on the division’s 2014 operating EBITDA. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory clearance by the antitrust authorities, and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2015.
“By selling our Intec Division to Minebea, we are realizing an important cornerstone of our long-term strategy and focus on our two core activities in Bioprocess and Laboratory. Over the past years we have successfully positioned our Intec business as a specialist for industrial weighing and control technologies and have reached healthy profitability levels. Under Minebea`s roof, this business will now gain the critical mass needed to further extend its footprint internationally, an important prerequisite for further growth. I am convinced that Minebea is the perfect new owner for this business because of the complementarity of the product portfolios and the geographical footprint, and also because of their commitment to long-term strategies and premium products,” commented Joachim Kreuzburg, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Sartorius.

Dimensioning and Weighing: Not Just For Parcel CarriersIndustry News

Dimensioning and weighing systems have come a long way over the years. Before cubing systems were conceived, measuring products and boxes in a warehouse was an arduous task done manually with tape measures and rulers. Manually measuring products with tape measures and rulers is not only prone to inaccuracies, but also slows down performance in the warehouse. Utilizing dimensioning and weighing systems is key to enhancing performance in the warehouse and also throughout the supply chain.  The benefits

Dimensioning and weighing systems can provide numerous advantages such as maximizing storage space, increasing sustainability in the warehouse and on the road, and managing and decreasing freight costs.
These systems better facilitate warehouse managers in their load planning process, which is essential to maximize storage space and make slotting decisions easier. When receiving food products that need to be managed and stored in the warehouse, knowing the products’ dimensional information and weight information will help determine the best placement of inventory. Dimensional Weight Pricing -a game changerIndustry News

UPS and FedEx will soon switch to charging by dimensional weight, a change likely to affect a third of ground shipments. An expert in freight bill auditing explains what dimensional weight is and what online retailers can do to minimize their costs.

UPS and FedEx will soon implement what is said to be the largest pricing increase in their company’s history. Both carriers announced they will be applying Dimensional Weight Pricing to all ground shipments, whereas today, only ground packages measuring greater than 3 cubic feet (5,184 cu. inches) are subject to Dimensional Weight pricing (this pricing is already in effect for all FedEx Air and UPS AIR services). This change is leaving shippers scrambling to try to quantify the financial implications. The Dimensional Weight rule change coupled with their annual general rate increase (GRI) only adds to the ongoing budgeting dilemma and pricing confusion.

Basically, a higher billable weight will apply to all packages where the Dimensional Weight exceeds the actual weight. Dimensional Weight is calculated by multiplying the length by width by height of the package (in inches) dividing by 166 (for domestic shipments) or 139 (for shipments to Canada) … unless a customized Dimensional Weight factor has been negotiated, in which case that factor should be used (any fraction is rounded up to the next lb.).....

Crash Dummies Gain Weight to Save LivesIndustry News

Crash-test dummies are undergoing a makeover to reflect the thicker waistlines and larger rear ends of Americans.

“Studies show that obese drivers are 78 percent more likely to die in a car crash,” said Chris O' Connor, CEO of Humanetics, the only U.S. producer of the dummies.

O’Conner said crash-test dummies are now typically modeled after a person who weighs about 167 pounds with a healthy body mass index. His company is designing new dummies based on the measurements of a 270-pound person with a BMI of 35, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as other health groups, consider morbidly obese.

O’Conner said seat belts, air bags and other safety features are designed for thinner people and don’t fit heavier people the same way....

DIRECTIVE 93/42/EEC CONCERNING MEDICAL DEVICES (THE MDD) 20th Oct 2014Industry News

ATTN: UK market.    If you are supplying weighing instruments that are used in the practice of medicine this is important.

The following clarification has been issued by the MHRA (Medicines and Health Care Regulatory Agency) regarding weighing instruments that are used in the practice of medicine.

If the manufacturer of a weighing scale only states that the scale is intended to provide a patient’s weight, with no other claims, then the scale does not need to be CE marked under the medical device regulations but will need to comply with the NAWI regulations. If the manufacturer of the weighing scale makes additional medical claims for the scale (for example that it calculates BMI or has additional ‘medical’ functions) then the medical device regulations would be likely to apply in addition to the NAWI regulations.

The effect of this is that if the weighing instrument only weighs, the Medical Devices Directive does not need to be referenced in the Declaration of Conformity. If there is more than one function, the instrument must comply with the MDD and compliance must be noted on the Declaration of Conformity. It should also be remembered that any instrument that the Medical Devices Directive applies to must also be registered with the MHRA.

Automation speeds up Breaded Products LinesIndustry News

The Ishida CCW-R-220 is handling a range of fresh and frozen breaded products such as chicken nuggets for discharge into trays at target weights of between 200g and 3 kilos.

The weigher is divided into two 10-head sections, each side capable of weighing up to 60 packs per minute to give a combined throughput of around 120 packs, but Martini Alimentare aims to gradually increase speed to around 160 packs per minute. The flexibility of the split weigher enables Martini to simultaneously handle different products or the same product at different weights....

In order to facilitate packing of the product into the shallow trays, Ishida’s Italian agent Itech AG has devised a bespoke distribution system. The weighed product is transferred into a special discharge hopper. This holds the product and then moves along the line with the tray to gradually deposit the product into the moving tray for a more even distribution of the nuggets.

As well as improved accuracy, Martini has reduced manpower on the line by half compared to the hand weighing operation that it previously employed.

The company says that in addition to its excellent accuracy and efficiency, the CCW-R-220 is easy to operate and maintain, with fast changeovers and easy cleaning. Full training was given to all relevant factory personnel as part of the installation process.
The Ishida weigher is part of Martini Alimentare’s on-going investment to further automate its production processes.

“Naturally we looked at other options, but with my knowledge of Ishida, I felt confident that the company would be able to find the right solution for this project,” comments Martini Alimentare’s Production General Manager Claudio Cabassi.
“The new weigher has made an immediate difference in terms of production and efficiency improvement. Nevertheless, we are only at the start of the process and we know that, as we become more familiar with the line, we can achieve an even better performance in terms of speed, accuracy and reduced manpower requirements and that is what we will be working on to deliver in the coming months.”

Even so, at the current rate, Martini Alimentare estimates that payback on the weigher will be achieved within one year.

Mettler Toledo -Productivity Guide brings lean principlesIndustry News

METTLER TOLEDO, the global manufacturer of scales and analytical instruments has addressed the effective use of filling, batching, checkweighing and inspection as part of a Food Productivity Guide with clear lean undertones.

Developed as a food process and equipment selection reference tool, the guide is aimed at food and beverage manufacturers with a view to providing insights and best practice ideas to enhance companies’ bottom lines.

As well as honing in on existing, successful processes, manufacturers are also pointed in the direction fo further capital investments to improve parts of the process, including weighing, inspection and measuring to produce more accurate material transfers, as well as more efficient tracking and tracing, more consistent filling and increased throughput in both automated and manual processes.

“Weighing and measuring are crucial in many of these process steps. Selecting the right technology and inspection methods—and making sure they can be easily integrated into a company’s existing MES/ERP systems—are key to increased efficiency and therefore bigger profit margins,” said Urs Berli, Market Manager Food, METTLER TOLEDO.

Key indicators for manufacturers to keep in mind include: reducing bad batches and assuring consistent product taste through traceable PC-guided formulation; ROI calculation tools to assess potential savings by reduced waste and minimised product giveaway; speeding up manual portioning processes; enhancing foreign body detection to reduce food safety risks; optimising throughput and uptime in vehicle weighing; achieving consistent, sustainable weighing precision and higher uptime via appropriate calibration and performance check procedures.

“With the Guide’s comprehensive nature, it is METTLER TOLEDO’s intention to support food manufacturing operations large and small to realize benefits through increased productivity, consumer satisfaction and profits,” Mr. Berli conculded.
